From Tybee Beautification Association President, Deb Barerro

As we observe the passing of another year, it is a great pleasure to look back on the contributions of Tybee Beautification Association’s dedicated members. TBA is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the natural beauty of our island and through partnerships with the City of Tybee Island and other local non-profits, made quite an impact in 2009!

TBA’s litter education campaign includes bi-annual beach sweeps and a special edition ‘After 4th of July Fireworks’ clean-up.

Over 500 volunteers tuned out in September alone to lend the City a helping hand to clean up our beautiful beach. When you combine that effort with our quarterly ‘Adopt-a-Highway’ events, TBA and our volunteers are responsible for removing a mountain of trash from our ecosystem. TBA’s famous  litter czar, Naz T Butt also help to spread our anti-litter message to local organizations. Naz T went into the classroom rapping & rhyming and also made appearances in local parades, (photo above) often escorted by TBA’s fun loving Bike Brigade.

In addition to TBA’s anti-litter efforts, the group spent alot of time beautifying public space on the island. With coordination through Tybee’s Better Hometown Initiative, TBA partnered with other non-profits and the business community to “Come Down & Clean Up” Tybrissa Street. The group picked up more cigarette butts than they could count and landscaped the City right of way on the heavily traveled business corridor.. Other gardening projects continued throughout the island, with special effort made to enhance the gazebo in Jaycee Park. The Gazebo was presented to the City by TBA and is heavily used by nursing home residents and their guests. The 3rd annual Native Plant Forum offered residents an opportunity to learn about the benefits of native plants, while the Rain Barrel Workshop offered participants the opportunity to see how conservation of water resources can benefit the environment and their pocketbooks. TBA’s recognition of accomplishments by locals is just another way to make a positive impact on the community. TBA’s prized Yard of the Month, as well as our ‘Holiday Cheer’ for business & residential holiday decorations, gives folks the feeling that we appreciate their efforts. too.

If you are new to the island (or if you have been here forever) and are looking to get more involved in the community, please consider joining TBA in some of our efforts. Feel free to attend our next meeting Wednesday, January 13. TBA meets at 7 pm in the Guardhouse in Jaycee Park.
