WELCOME  HOME, BURKE DAY!

After almost 16 years of service to the people of the 163rd District, Representative Burke Day, Chairman of the Public Safety Committee of Georgia’s House of Represent-atives is retiring and coming home to Tybee Island.

Day, who’s a Member of the Appropria-tions, Retirement, and Ways & Means Committees has served in the House for 10 years as ranking Member of the House Public Safety Committee, first being elected in 1993.

Rep. Day helped rewrite Georgia’s “Right to Carry” and “Concealed Weapons” laws among many others. He has also served for eight years equally on the Appropriations Committee and the Ways & Means Committee, where Rep. Day helped to initiate real property tax reform laws in 1996. He lead the development of landmark property tax legislation that is now being implemented in other states like Texas, and co-authored the repeal of the Intangibles Tax. He is a staunch property-tax reformist, and chief architect and co-sponsor of the Stephens-Day Property Tax Relief Bill that passed in November of 2000.  He also authored “The Public’s Right to Know” bill, which strengthens the ethics and efficiency of state government.

As a former Police Commissioner, Day served on two confidential task forces established by George W. Bush, formed after September 11, 2001 working with federal agencies, including the F.B.I., U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Attorney’s office, I.C.E. and others. He worked closely with leaders of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia State Patrol, GEMA, Office of Homeland Security, Assoc. of Georgia Police Chiefs and state sheriffs. At 52 years of age, Day obtained his Master’s in Criminal Justice to increase and strengthen his knowledge in the vast field of Public Safety. Chairman Day was the keynote speaker at 2007’s world renown International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya, Israel.

Burke Day married his high school sweetheart, Sally. They have three adult sons, Brandon, Jonathan and Daniel, and two grandchildren, Madison Noelle Day and Dean Burke Day.  He was also recently chosen as Tybee’s “2010 Beach Bum Parade Grand Marshal.” The Royal Coronation Ceremony will be held on Wed, May 12th at Marlin Monroe’s Beachside Grill.
