Tybee Island, GA (Sun. 23rd, 2010):

An Arkansas man and his mother who landed a single engine plane on Tybee’s North Beach Sunday said they just wanted to see the sites and take a walk on the beach.  Tybee Police were called to the scene, and Chief Jimmy Price and Fire Chief Skip Sasser arrived to discover the abandoned small air craft “parked” on the shore not too far away from the rising tide.  Thankfully the pilot, 36 year old Mark Jensen from Arkansas and his mother, the sole passenger were found not too long afterward.

The pair had flown the craft to Atlanta from Arkansas, then apparently decided to take a detour to the coast before making the trip home.  Jensen told police he’d landed on other beaches, particularly in Alabama in the past.

The pilot was arrested and charged with reckless conduct and operating a motorized craft on the beach.  The mother was not arrested.  The single engine plane, a blue and white Kitfox 5 Outback was towed and impounded!

According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the aircraft is registered to Jensen, of Vernal, Utah.  FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said an investigation has been launched, citing that usually when an aircraft lands in such a manner it’s due to an emergency situation – apparently not the case with Sunday’s touch down on North Beach.
