Bring ‘em on!

By Joe Richardson

September, as we all know around here, is the peak month for hurricane season along the east coast.  And for Tybee Island surfers, this September started just as they hoped.  Hurricane Earl stayed far offshore of coastal Georgia, but it was big and strong enough to send out large swells that came ashore along Tybee for a couple of days at the very beginning of the month.  The parking lots were full of vehicles that brought not only surfers, but also photographers, observers, and news and sports reporters.  For a mid-week period, the beach crowd was pretty impressive, and at times concentrated as the large swells pushed water well up the beach beyond the normal high tide line.  And the surfing line-up was also crowded, especially between the pier and south jetty as it seemed that anyone with a surfboard was taking advantage of the larger than normal late summer waves at Tybee.

As this column is being written, there is a hurricane still days away but projected to send us some swell, and it is followed by a named tropical storms, and that is followed by a developing disturbance off the Cape Verdes Islands.  So the remainder of September is looking real promising for Tybee surfing this year.

Georgia Surfers Score at SC State Championships

The annual South Carolina Governor’s Cup of Surfing is held each year at Folly Beach, SC, and is considered the SC state championships.  The Southern South Carolina District of the Eastern Surfing Association organizes and hosts the event, and they invite surfing competitors from the Georgia, Northern SC, and Southern NC Districts to compete making this event essentially a southern regional competition.  The two-day event is unprecedented in the amount and level of support from local (Folly Beach and Charleston area) businesses, rental agencies, restaurants, water sports interests, and municipalities.  Just the amount and variety of food provided continually to the beach during the two days is impressive enough to bring surfers and their families back year after year.

A number of Tybee area surfers participated in this year’s SC Governor’s Cup.  As usual, Jeff Mosley, our ESA GA District Director, served as the announcer for the contest.  The goal for competitors in these larger contests is to make it through the preliminary rounds and semi-finals during the first days and still be surfing on Sunday, the day of the finals.  And three of our Tybee area surfers did just that – making it to the finals on Sunday.  In the end, Ms. Georgia Cook captured 3rd place in the Girls Shortboard division.  This was Georgia’s first contest beyond our local ESA contests, so to be a finalist and take 3rd place is quite an accomplishment for Ms. Cook (who just happened to be the Tybee Times Surfer of the Month during August).  Atsushi Yamada made his presence known also making it to the finals and captured 5th place among the extremely talented and competitive pool of Masters Long Boarders found in the SC and southern NC area.  Big congratulations to Atsushi, not only for this impressive finish, but for also winning the last (of 6) surfboards given away during the event’s many raffles.  Atsushi had a pleasant ride back to Savannah, carrying with him his trophy, a tired family, and a brand new board!  And Tybee surfer, Josh Richardson, who is a 2010 ESA All Star Team member, also made into Sunday’s competition in the Junior Longboard division.  Although fifteen-year-old Josh is in his first year of this highly competitive 15-17 year olds division, he has been making his mark up and down the coast as “the Georgia boy” among the longboarders.  At the end of the day on Sunday, Josh captured first place at the SC Governor’s Cup and state championship! Sending big congratulations to our Tybee surfers for their successes in South Carolina!

ESA Georgia District Contest #2

The Eastern Surfing Association Georgia District held its second contest of the 2010 competition season at Tybee on Saturday, Sept. 11th, during a beautiful warm day with clean moderately-sized waves.  Contributing (or not) to the pleasant contest conditions were a lack of strong drift and lack of jellyfish.  With what appears to becoming a constantly requested addition to the regular competition, a Push and Surf event was again added to the day’s schedule.  It was announced by Tara Mosley, co-director of the GA ESA District, that proceeds from the Push and Surf events will be donated to Surfers Healing.  Among the ESA competitors, the surfers were competing not only for the contest’s titles, but also for important points accumulated toward earning slots and invitations to the 2011 ESA Mid Atlantic Regional Championships that will be held in NC next spring.  Contest #2 results are listed below.  The next contest is Oct. 2nd.
