The Tybee Times would like to express sincere condolences to the family and friends of Charles J. “Chuck” Bishop who passed away on January 29th, 2017, in Gainesville, GA.

Charles J. “Chuck” Bishop formerly of Tybee Island, Ga. passed away on January 29, 2017 at his daughter’s residence, Frances Wiley, in Gainesville, Ga.

Chuck Bishop was born February 18, 1923 in Patterson, NJ. He was the youngest son of Bertram Bishop of Patterson, NJ and Wilhelmina DeZoort of Dirksland, Overflakkee Island, The Netherlands. Chuck Bishop was raised by his Dutch Grandparents, after the sudden death of his parents and only brother from Tuberculosis.

He was an honored World War II Veteran, having served in the Merchant Marines and US Navy. He saw action with his Naval tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea.

After WWII, Chuck married Sylvia Iris Frampton of East Woodlands, Frome, Somerset, England. They moved to Tybee Island, Ga. where they made their home for 50 years. They owner and operated the Bel-Air Motel. Chuck retired from the Tybee Island Police Department after 30 years of Service with the rank of Major. He was a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 154, Tybee Island, Ga.

Chuck was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Sylvia Iris Frampton of East Woodlands, Frome, Somerset, England, and Tybee Island, Ga., also a daughter, Jeanie Bishop of Patterson, NJ. He is survived by five children: Charles A. Bishop of Pompton Lakes, NJ; Frances B. Wiley of Gainesville, Ga.; Caroline B. Fore of Jesup, GA.; Melissa AB. Simon of Lake City, FL; Nancy-Jean B. Hughes of Moncks Corner, SC.

Additionally, Chuck had Seven Grandchildren: Deena B. Brennan, Chester, NJ; Jordan Wiley, Gainesville, Ga.; Daniel Fore, Douglas, GA; Sarah Fore Thornton, Jesup, Ga.; Nathaniel Simon, Lake City, FL; Charles Hughes, Charles J. Bishop Alexandria, VA; Chase Hughes, Moncks Corner, SC. and Seven Great-Grandchildren, Devin Brennan and Mathew Brennan of Chester, NJ; Gunter Fore, Raya Fore, Jaxson Fore and Dalton Elijah Fore of Douglas, Ga., and Wyatt Allen Thornton of Jesup, Ga.,  and many nieces and nephews

Chuck was a loving husband, father, uncle and brother-in-law.  He was a kind caring generous man, who gave his all, and asked for nothing.  He was known to have saved many lives on Tybee Island. He trained and mentored many young men to become Police Officers.

Chuck and Iris enjoyed traveling to England and Europe to visit Family and friends.

A private ceremony for family and friends will be held in the Spring at Tybee Island, Ga., and burial at All Saints Church, Tybee Island, Ga.
