The Tybee Island Community Garden is off and running! We are so excited to be a point where we can start having fun. It’s been a lot of work, but gratifying to see a diverse group come together and create the foundation for a successful community effort. Those of you that have been sitting back and waiting to see if it happens before committing, now is the time to dig in.
The community garden was the brainchild of Diane Kaufman, local business woman and owner of Mermaid Cottages. After seeking the guidance of community garden expert and founder of SUGA (Savannah Urban Gardening Alliance), Kelly Lockamy, we approached the city about locating a community garden on City Property. Kelly’s experience and expertise has helped expedite the process and her guidance has been invaluable. The city has allowed us to site the garden between the “Y” building and the old school.
Joe Wilson with Tybee DPW has been a huge help in preparing the site. He’s also has provided us with some barrels for our water catchment systems. Because of the City’s mandate to cut back on water withdrawal from the aquifer we will have to set up a system of rain barrels, but we are definitely up to the challenge and looking forward to being an example of water conservation on Tybee.
The garden is divided into 2 areas, the individual plots and the communal space. So far we have leased 12 individual plots and there are currently 3 participants in the communal area. There are plans to build a wheelchair accessible bed that will be available for use by wheelchair bound and elderly individuals. Hands on Savannah is planning a workday on April 20 and is looking for volunteers to construct this bed. The “Y” has built 2 beds and the kids already have it planted! Beds or communal shares can be leased for $50/ year. We will build more beds as we get more participants.
