Surf Report:
by Joe Richardson

The Tybee surfing community truly wishes best of luck to one of its own who recently moved to the west coast to attend college. Ben Thompson recently moved to California to further his college work at a school of music, which has been his dream for some time.

For years, Ben has been one of the top ESA competitors in Georgia and consistently represented our district at Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships. We will miss you, Ben, and we wish you the best. Hopefully we will continue to see you occasionally on “Ruby.”

You don’t need to read it here to know that we are in the midst of the sea wasp jellyfish season! They started making their presence known gradually and off-and-on during mid to late July; but by the end of July, they were here in full force. If this year’s population behaves normally, they should become less numerous (but not completely gone) by late August. So hopefully as they leave, the early fall waves will start appearing. Speaking of waves, we got lucky for a few days in early and mid July, and the waves held steady long enough for the ESA Georgia District to get its first 2010 season contest in.

Eastern Surfing Association Georgia District News:
The Eastern Surfing Association Georgia District got its 2010 competition underway with its first contest on Tybee July 17th.  For anyone who missed seeing the contest, Joey Wilson has posted more than 1200 photos of the day’s action at:   Check under the “surfing and skimboarding” gallery for the July 17 ESA contest.  Our contest, along with some of Joey’s pictures, was featured on the Eastern Surf Magazine website:   Check  the “Amateur Hour” link under the “competition” tab. The Coastal Source (WJCL/ FOX28 TV) also covered the contest (thanks Big Guy), so there’s still a way to review some of the day’s action from their website: news/localsports/story/Making-Waves-on-Tybee-Island/E_pl5Qw4HE6UF89ut-K6QQ.cspx.  Back by popular demand, was a “Push and Surf” session during the contest for the mini-menehunes.

Surfing was very competitive in all divisions from the Menehunes to the Legends.  The Open Division competition produced some great surfing during the early heats, semifinals as well as in the final round.  In the end, Phillip George won the Open Division.  Phillip was one of a few surfers to post double wins – he also took first place in the Masters Division. Other double-division winners were: Noah Mosely, Josh Richardson, Jimmy Manning – Georgia Cook captured the Girls’ crown. Below are final results of the July 17th contest.
